Bezalel Journal of Visual and Material Culture is the academic publication of the Department of Visual and Material Culture at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem. It is a biannual, peer-reviewed online journal in Hebrew (ISSN 2707-3610), offering critical and creative perspectives on visual and material culture in this time and place.
Select students from various Bezalel departments serve as editorial assistants for each issue, and each issue is designed by a select group of students from the Department of Visual Communication at Bezalel.
Call for Papers
Bezalel Journal of Visual and Material Culture is a biannual online publication dedicated to fostering vibrant, polyphonic intellectual discourse in matters of visual and material culture. The journal publishes academic articles, essays, various forms of commentary and as well as innovative and imaginative ideas in diverse verbal and visual formats.
In the spirit of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem, we invite manuscripts that offer critical and creative perspectives on visual and material culture in this time and place. We particularly wish to encourage voices from the margins of discourse and seek to serve as a platform for speculative, performative and experimental gestures.
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts for the following four sections:
Articles: 5,000-7,000 words. This section welcomes groundbreaking critical articles that chart new avenues for thought and vision. All submissions in this category undergo a double-blind peer review process.
Essays: 2,000-4,000 words. This section includes short articles, personal essays, conversations and various kinds of compositions offering original insight into significant phenomena in visual and material culture as well as compelling reflections on the very act of writing within a multifaceted culture.
Notes: 1,000-2,000 words. This section welcomes reviews of books, artworks or cultural phenomena as well as cultural impressions from the margins, original manifestos, object analyses, etc.
Fictions: This section invites verbal and visual expressions such as visual essays, experimental compositions, short graphic stories, collages and posters with speculative, performative, playful, futuristic or mythological dimensions that invent ways to stretch the boundaries of thought and produce new knowledge through creative imagination.
