Cadell: The Life and Works of a Scottish Colourist 1883-1937 was the first book devoted entirely to the life of the remarkable artist, and leading Scottish Colourist, F.C.B. Cadell. Now fully revised, this expanded edition includes a new essay by Duncan Macmillan which complements the fascinating biographical materials presented in Tom Hewlett's original text. Highlighting the artist's outgoing and generous personality and his wit, the narrative also demonstrates Cadell's extraordinarily versatile artistic talent, which helped to lay the foundations of twentieth-century Scottish art. While the spontaneity of early works reveals Cadell's debt to Impressionism, later paintings, produced after the artist's time in the trenches, established his reputation as a master of colour. Works which combined well-defined structures with striking primary colours placed him alongside artists S.J. Peploe, J.D. Fergusson and Leslie Hunter – a respected grouping now recognised internationally as the Scottish Colourists.
