Joseph H. Schwarcz (1917-1988) was an Israeli scholar, known for his book Ways of the Illustrator: Visual Communication in Children's Literature (1982) as well as for the book The Picture Book Comes of Age (1991) which was published posthumous by Chava Schwarcz, his widow, and ALA editor Tina MacAyeal. Betsy Hearne, a life-long friend, writes in the forward to this book that he has taught for 50 years "as if he were born to it". Schwarcz has also written a number of articles in German, English and Hebrew.
